RE-THINKING OR RE-MODELLING THE NIGERIAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM

The Nigerian educational system as we have it today is very poor and below standards. This is evidenced in the quality of graduates we see today, the poor managerial skills, poor technical skills and even poor governance. The teachers are not to blame. But the system since “garbage in and garbage out” formula must follow most man-made processes. The Process is very faulty as you will see in the image below. The first problem with the system is that rather can producing confident graduates who possess the right mental attitude and esteem to face the future and industry life, it produces half-baked, disillusioned graduates who lack direction as to what they want out of life. Most of those who even attempt an industry interview make nonsense of the universities that produced them before their interviewers or prospective employers. Nobody taught them in school about the real competitive life out there in the industry. It was not their fault, but the system that they underwent....

Personal Development Planning

I owe many organizations in which I have worked in my career development and success stories. It is very encouraging when you live and work in an environment where your efforts and contributions are valued and appreciated. Not only that, by your employer places a premium on developing you. Indeed it is a rare privilege which most employees take for granted. However, your career aspiration lies in your hands. Like Daniel Goleman puts its  "...Self-Improvement Begins with Self-Reflection"  . Having decided your career path, the the question comes to mind "How do I get there?". This exercise in itself helps one identify his strengths and weakness and helps map out the STRATEGY to employ in pursuit of life's or professional ambition. 'Where should I be looking at?' What are my unique competencies and strengths?' or 'Where should I be developing the most?' How do I allocate my time effectively towards building myself up for the chall...

Making a Career Jump into a 'War-torn' Country

Count the Cost Properly   Recently, I have had a number of people calling me and asking me to advise them on their imminent career moves into 'troubled ' countries. But the paypack is mouth-watering...hmmm. I hear them asking me: "Please advise me on what to do...". Whenever someone comes to me with such an inquiry, what comes to my mind immediately is that this person is really attracted to this job offer because of the remuneration or other package or benefits attached to the job offer. Most times, these jobs are jobs that are based offshore. And if they are offshore, it means the employee seeks to expand his 'global' scope of professional experience, which in itself is very valuable. Most bluechip companies today will prefer a candidate that has multi-cultural experience in his/her job experience. However, every opportunity needs to be properly thought out so that one does not jump into trouble, rather than opportunity. It is very tricky sin...

I have Two Job Offers, Which should I choose?

I know most of us who are a more experienced in the labour market have come across this question especially from the younger job starters or new graduates. 'Please advise me: I have two or three job offers. Which should I choose?' Usually, the attraction comes from the high-paying ones. My candid advice is to look inwards and think of which of these would offer you the opportunity to enhance or hone your SKILLS .  Today, a fresh graduate from any Nigerian university is simply a neophyte "knowing nothing" and the earlier he/she understands the realities of the employment space, the better for him/her. As a new graduate, please focus on GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES more than anything else and after two or more years after gaining the required skills and competencies then you can begin to DEMAND your pay package since by then you would have achieved high bargaining power. You need EXPERIENCE and your focus should be a job that offers your careers advancement prospects, w...
