Importance of Recommendations

Letters of recommendation can give you an edge if done right
By Toni Bowers
A positive letter of recommendation can go a long way toward advancing your career. Having someone else tell a prospective employer what a talented person you are can bring a lot of weight to your job candidacy. It’s also freeing if you’re a modest sort of person who isn’t comfortable marketing yourself. (Of course, you could also end up in the unenviable position I once did in which my former boss asked me to write my own letter of recommendation and then he signed it.)It’s always best to have a get a letter of recommendation from someone who can vouch for your expertise on the job, but you an also include one from someone in your personal life who can vouch for your character and ability to get along with others.

This is where professional recommendation would be useful. I personally advise job seekers to use the "Recommendations" tab on linkedin as I know friends and associates who have landed jobs through this functionality on Linkedin.

Go ahead today and ask your friend or associate for a professional recommendation. It is a move in the right direction as it brings your professional credibility to the fore.

Yearly, professionals from all works of life in Nigeria research for the right schools for an MBA degree. While some take to full-time MBA programmes, others opt for Part-time or distance-learning MBA degree. In my own view, it is better to opt for an Online or Part-time MBA course than the full-time. The difference between the two is that in the full-time, the student is required to be physically present at campus site, while in the Online or distance-learning category, the student has his training and course delivery done via online media such as the internet. At the end of the day, both options should lead to the same end, namely, an MBA certification.
