About the Role

The core purpose of this role is to maximize revenue and subscriber acquisition (both gross and net additions) opportunities within an assigned territory. The Area Sales Manager achieves this through ensuring optimal channel effectiveness (covering both wholesale and retail segments), guaranteeing sufficient recharge availability, and diligently executing planned sales, distribution, and marketing strategies.

🎯 Key Responsibilities

The Area Sales Manager is entrusted with a range of strategic and operational duties, all aimed at driving market performance and maintaining Airtel's competitive edge.

📈 Sales and Subscriber Performance

  • Recharge Sales Target Achievement: The manager must ensure the adequate and widespread availability of all recharge denominations across sub-Channel Partner (CP) and retail touchpoints. They are responsible for guaranteeing that channel partners distribute stock effectively to their networks of sub-CPs and retailers to meet Electronic Recharge Card (ERC), Recharge Voucher (RCV), and E-pin targets in specified ratios. The role requires the constant identification of opportunities to drive activation and recharge sales within the territory.
  • Achieving Share of Gross & Net Additions (SOGA & SONA): This involves ensuring the comprehensive achievement of Gross Adds targets through driving dedicated market initiatives in the assigned area. The manager will deploy initiatives, including new site launches, to increase Gross Adds (GAD) and ensure the activation of Quality GADs. Furthermore, the development and implementation of activities designed to increase Net Adds (SONA) in the area are crucial.
  • Decrement and Revenue Generation: The position requires the implementation of customer-driven activities such as product launches and town storms within the assigned area. The manager will drive voice and data business performance by implementing revenue-generating activities and strategic initiatives throughout the territory.

👥 Channel Management and Compliance

  • Direct Team and Activity Management: The manager must effectively manage direct activation teams and monitor the activation activities carried out by Channel Partner buses.
  • KYC Optimization: The role demands Know Your Customer (KYC) optimization at the trade level by ensuring the adequate and functional deployment of KYC kits, with a specific focus on driving KYC inactivity to nil.

📣 Branding and Distribution

  • Channel Branding and Visibility: The manager is responsible for ensuring appropriate and effective outlet branding is executed across the territory, maintaining the established "look of success." This also involves the effective management of Point of Sale (POS) stock in the warehouse to prevent damage, wastage, or obsolescence, and training Market Developers on POS deployment in line with branding standards. Identifying additional visibility opportunities for the Airtel brand is paramount.
  • Distribution Infrastructure: The manager is tasked with recruiting the appropriate number of Retailers—including Retail Sales Officers (RSOs), Super Sales Officers (SSOs), and Electronic Recharge Card Operators (ERCOs)—in alignment with scientific distribution requirements. Maintaining a KYC infrastructure ratio of 1 kit:3 SSOs is a key metric. Identifying and recruiting suitable sub-channel partners for effective product re-distribution, migrating other retailers to become one-stop-shop SSOs, and maintaining the RSO(5):SSO(1) ratio are critical components.
  • BTS Management: Responsibilities include ensuring the constant elimination of Call-Level Separation (CLS). The manager must develop subscriber acquisition and other marketing initiatives to drive revenue in CLS site locations and manage New Site Launch Plans and Distribution Preparedness. They are also expected to effectively drive and manage target-driven initiatives and projects.

🧠 Industry Awareness

  • Competition Intelligence: The role requires the effective reporting of competitive activities within the assigned territory and the implementation of appropriate counter-initiatives. The manager must diligently track ongoing market initiatives and address or escalate any unusual competitor activity or sales support issues that may pose a threat to the business's performance.

Why You Need an Online MBA

Photo credit: Under30ceo.com While securing an MBA degree can open the door to high-paying positions in the corporate world, it will also beneficial for an entrepreneur. Yearly, professionals from all works of life in Nigeria research for the right schools for an MBA degree. While some take to full-time MBA programmes, others opt for Part-time or distance-learning MBA degree. In my own view, it is better to opt for an Online or Part-time MBA course than the full-time. The difference between the two is that in the full-time, the student is required to be physically present at campus site, while in the Online or distance-learning category, the student has his training and course delivery done via online media such as the internet. At the end of the day, both options should lead to the same end, namely, an MBA certification. I have personally undertook two post-graduate degrees from Universities abroad and both of them were run on part-time basis. My first post-graduate degree ...
