Summary of the Role

The Head of Talent Acquisition & Development, Africa will play a critical role in supporting the Africa business unit to achieve its objectives. This is accomplished by ensuring the presence of excellent, values-aligned employees and leaders who can effectively deliver the business plan.

This mandate is fulfilled through excellence across several key areas: talent acquisition, talent management and succession planning, talent development (covering leadership, high potentials, and early talents), training, learning and development, engagement, and performance management.

Furthermore, this position leads Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) for the Africa business unit, with the aim of attracting, retaining, and developing a diverse range of talents who will contribute new approaches and thinking to the team.

The Head of Talent Acquisition & Development, Africa will lead a small team of talent professionals. This role reports directly to the Global Talent & Diversity Director and maintains a strong dotted-line relationship with the People Director, Africa.


Key Responsibilities

Talent, Performance, Learning & Development, and Culture

  • Leads the execution of talent management, performance management, Leadership Development, and Cultural development/engagement initiatives.
  • Delivers talent management in line with Global frameworks, processes, and tools.
  • Drives the development and execution of Talent Management strategies and processes across Africa, ensuring alignment with global direction and business requirements. This includes representing Africa’s progress and requirements to the Global Centre of Excellence (CoE).
  • Implements development diagnostic tools/assessments.
  • Ensures the Africa business develops and maintains an excellent leadership pipeline by facilitating Talent reviews, Succession Planning at the Africa level, and coordinating communication with HR and other Heads of Talent.
  • Develops, executes, and manages talent acceleration and engagement programmes and initiatives, which may include programmes for Women in Leadership, High Potentials (HiPos), etc., aligned with the business and HR strategy.

Talent Acquisition (TA)

  • Develops and executes TA strategies aligned with business requirements.
  • Manages the end-to-end hiring process to fulfil hiring requirements: Sourcing, interviewing, psychometric tests, and offer negotiations to closure.
  • Implements global TA policies and programmes.
  • Manages new employee induction and orientation on a timely basis.
  • Supports the team in maintaining a ‘direct sourcing’ mindset and filling as many leadership roles as possible through this process, alongside developing talent pipelines for leadership and critical roles.
  • Manages recruiting costs in line with business budgets, including the development and maintenance of Preferred Supplier Lists where necessary.
  • Drives consistent candidate messaging in Africa through the use of social media and other channels, based on the Global Employee Value Proposition (EVP).
  • Ensures Hiring Managers are sufficiently trained in the hiring process and on how to create an inclusive and bias-free hiring experience.
  • Ensures an excellent candidate experience throughout the recruitment lifecycle.

Other Responsibilities

  • Ensures that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is embedded within the entire talent lifecycle and becomes a core aspect of the business's thinking.
  • Leads a team of Talent Development and Talent Acquisition professionals, focusing on developing them to their full potential.
  • Represents the Talent functions at leadership forums when required (e.g., local and global People Leadership Team (PLT), business unit Leadership Team (LT), etc.).
  • Acts as the custodian of the PZ Employer Brand across the Africa region.
  • Ensures that Talent engagement is a focus for leaders and manages the annual all-employee engagement survey.
  • Develops data points in alignment with other regions and the global CoE, which will demonstrate regular progress.

Required Experience and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following experience:

  • Deep experience within at least one of the Talent disciplines: Talent, Performance, L&D Culture, or Talent Acquisition.
  • Experience of working within a matrixed, global organisation.
  • Experience in the FMCG sector would be beneficial.
  • Proven experience of leading and developing a team of professionals and subject matter experts.
  • Experience of successfully embedding DEI initiatives within Talent processes and programmes.
  • Experience of using HR and Talent platforms (PZ Cussons uses Workday).
