The Role: Mechanical Engineer

Location: Nigeria

Coca-Cola HBC seeks a highly motivated, hands-on Mechanical Engineer to serve as a central pillar in the maintenance and optimisation of its world-class beverage production lines. This role is considered crucial for guaranteeing peak machinery performance, achieving demanding efficiency targets, and actively participating in the mentorship and development of technical teams.

🔑 Key Responsibilities:

The Mechanical Engineer's duties encompass comprehensive leadership across maintenance domains, operational performance, supply chain support, and team development.

I. Driving Efficiency and Reliability

  • Production & Performance Mastery: The Engineer ensures that production lines consistently meet and surpass established net efficiency targets and maintain a high standard of line readiness. This involves maximising machine utilisation, alongside diligently tracking and reporting performance against established maintenance Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Maintenance Leadership (Autonomous, Preventive, Planned, Predictive):
    • Autonomous Maintenance: The role requires implementing and auditing production line lubrication maps and logs, establishing comprehensive inspection lists, and planning/executing autonomous maintenance activities (specifically Inspection, Lubrication, and Tightening).
    • Troubleshooting: The Engineer takes the lead on major breakdown troubleshooting (those exceeding 30 minutes in duration), developing thorough Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and actively coaching Shift Leaders and line operators on highly effective line troubleshooting techniques.
    • Preventive & Planned Maintenance: Defining and executing corrective and preventive actions derived from RCA is a core duty. This also includes planning, assessing, and executing scheduled production line overhauls and all planned maintenance activities, while strictly ensuring high PM compliance.
    • Line Stability: The Engineer is responsible for implementing Commissioning, Qualification, and Verification (CQV) protocols to guarantee stable and sustained line restarts following maintenance activities.
    • Predictive Maintenance (PdM): This role owns the plant's PdM process, including the crucial creation, monitoring, and analytical interpretation of predictive health data.

II. Supply Chain & Team Development

  • Spare Parts Management: The Engineer defines and manages critical spare parts lists, ensuring appropriate Minimum/Maximum stock levels and immediate availability within the plant warehouse. This function coordinates spare parts ordering (in strict alignment with Repairs & Maintenance and working capital budgets) and manages the technical inspection and receipt processes within the SAP system.
  • Coaching & Mentoring: The Engineer acts as the onboarding mentor/buddy for newly recruited Mechanical Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and PM Technicians, providing essential coaching and hands-on training across the full spectrum of maintenance tasks.
  • Compliance & Improvement: The role functions as a Circle Leader within the PM (Progressive Maintenance) agenda. The Engineer is responsible for ensuring strict adherence to and meeting KPIs for all critical plant audits (e.g., AIB/TPM/GESMS), thereby consistently upholding all mandated quality, food safety, and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) guidelines.

🔍 Qualifications for Success

The ideal candidate will possess the technical foundation and behavioural attributes necessary to excel in a high-speed manufacturing environment.

Education & Experience:

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical or an equivalent discipline) is required.
  • Experience: The candidate should have between one (1) and three (3) years of relevant professional experience, ideally gained within a fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) or high-speed manufacturing setting.

Core Skills:

  • Technical Skills: Proven, robust troubleshooting skills specifically in a production environment are essential.
  • Foundational Skills: Fluency in the English language and strong computer proficiency are mandatory.
  • Behavioral Skills: The individual must demonstrate basic leadership skills, a high level of adaptability to changing priorities, and the capacity to effectively collaborate within diverse team cultures.

Photo credit: Under30ceo.com While securing an MBA degree can open the door to high-paying positions in the corporate world, it will also beneficial for an entrepreneur. Yearly, professionals from all works of life in Nigeria research for the right schools for an MBA degree. While some take to full-time MBA programmes, others opt for Part-time or distance-learning MBA degree. In my own view, it is better to opt for an Online or Part-time MBA course than the full-time. The difference between the two is that in the full-time, the student is required to be physically present at campus site, while in the Online or distance-learning category, the student has his training and course delivery done via online media such as the internet. At the end of the day, both options should lead to the same end, namely, an MBA certification. I have personally undertook two post-graduate degrees from Universities abroad and both of them were run on part-time basis. My first post-graduate degree ...
